    Noey travaille maintenant à plein temps dans un atelier beaucoup plus proche de la maison. À moins de 10 minutes, c’est appréciable (c’était 45 minutes pour se rendre à son emploi précédent, d’où elle a démissioné au bout de deux mois). C’est une bonne société, gérée par des êtres humains. Elle a été embauchée comme apprentie à un salaire plus élevé que la boîte précédente. Tous les jeudis elle va au collège où elle suit sa deuxième année de formation d’opératrice de machines-outils. Elle a même entamé la programmation de machines à commandes numériques, c’est trop cool. Le seul point négatif c’est qu’elle commence tôt, à 7 heures du matin. Enfin, au moins comme ça on apprend à ne pas veiller trop tard le soir.

    Notre fille a atteint ses 16 ans

    Le refuge pour sans-abris où je faisais du bévévolat l’hiver dernièr a fermé. Notre région a changé de cap et se tourne désormais vers des solutions à long terme plutôt que des mesures d’urgence pour aider les sans-logis, et j’ose croire que ça va au final permettre d’apporter une aide durable pour les gens qui ont besoin d’un toit sur la tête. Je sais qu’il y aura toujours des gens en demande de refuges temporaires, et il existe toujours des alternatives dans la région, mais si on peut améliorer la situation générale à long terme je suis d’accord. Suite à la fermeture du refuge, je fais maintenant du bénévolat pour l’

    Tandis que notre fille, en classe de première, prépare ses candidatures universitaires et autres concours d’entrée en école de musique, notre fils a enfin accepté de se consacrer à une activité extra-scolaire régulière. Bien que nous ayons un piano, une guitare acoustique et une flûte traversière à la maison, il ne s’y intéresse point : ce qu’il veut c’est faire des percussions (il veut être batteur de rock, pas faire du bongo). Alors je lui ai déniché une batterie électronique (afin qu’il s’entraîne avec un casque sur les oreilles histoire ne pas nous rendre fous), et jusqu’à présent les choses se passent mieux que prévu : il répète régulièrement, fait de véritables progrès, et a même demandé à se produire pour le spectacle de Noël de l’école (son morceau a eu un franc succès). Je suis content qu’il ait finalement trouvé une activité à son goût.

    Nous avons finalement pris le taureau par les cornes et en juillet nous avous commencé les rénovations de notre vieille cuisine. C’est une tâche énorme parce que nous faisons tout nous-même et ne voulons pas recourir au crédit à la consommation. Ça veut dire que le projet a avancé doucement jusqu’ici, mais je suis heureux de pouvoir annoncer qu’à compter de décembre, plancher, gaz naturel, plomberie, circuit 240V, four, plaques de cuisson, évier et plan de travail sont installés et fonctionnels. Il reste quelques prises électiques à ajouter, faire l’éclairage, installer un bar, finir le cadre de l’ouverture dans le mur, installer la crédence et passer une ou deux couches de peinture. Grosso-modo la cuisine est en place (le gros-œuvre est terminé) mais il y a encore les travaux de finition à faire.

    Noey started working full-time for a shop that is much closer to home. She has less than 10 minutes of travel time, which is good (45 minutes each way for the previous job, which she quit after two months). It is a good company, run by human beings. They hired her as an apprentice, at a higher wage than what she had at the previous place. And every Thursday she attends college where she does her second year of training to be a general machinist. She even started CNC programming, which I find is pretty neat. The only thing that kind of sucks is that she starts early in the morning, at 7:00. Well, at least we are learning not to stay up to late at night now.

    The winter shelter for homeless people for which I had been volunteering last year has closed. Our region has changed focus in the way it wants to address homelessness, and is now set on trying to find long-term solutions rather than emergency measures; I trust that this will eventually provide sustainable help to people in need of a place to live. I know that there will always be some people who need temporary shelters, and there are still options available in the region, but if we can improve things in the long run I am cool with it.     While our 11th-grader of a daughter is focused on university and music school auditions, our son has finally accepted to engage in an extra-curricular activity on a regular basis. We have a piano, an acoustic guitar and a (transverse) flute at home, but he will touch none of these: he wants to learn to play the drums (as in rock band drum kit, not the bongo type). I therefore got him an electronic set (he can practice with headphones without driving us crazy), and so far things are going surprisingly well: he does practice regularly, actually makes progress, and even asked to perform at the Christmas talent show in school (his number was very successful). I am glad he found an activity he actually enjoys.

    After all these years we’ve bitten the bullet and started renovating our old kitchen in July. This is a huge undertaking because we are doing it all by ourselves and have no intention of using financing for this project. This means that things have been moving slowly, but I am happy to report that as of December the flooring, natural gas, plumbing, 240V power, appliances, sink and counter-top are all in place and fully functional. We still have to add a couple of electrical outlets, do the lighting, install a breakfast bar, frame the opening we did in the wall, pick and install the back-splash and add a few coats of paint. So basically, the bulk of the kitchen is in place, all the heavy-duty stuff is completed, but there is still some finishing work to do.
